Online Forex Trading & Forex Broker | OANDA

Oanda changed my demo account server

I had been using this particular demo account for the last 2 weeks or so. Been practicing my new strategy successfully on indices. I was previously on the Practice 4 server which which was perfect.
Fast forward today, I get an email from Oanda saying they've moved me to a Practice 2 server. I log in to the new one and it only has Forex pairs and no indices. Plus, all my trade history is now gone.
I feel like they didn't want me to continue developing my strategy since I was being successful with my trading. I feel cheated.
Has anyone experienced this before?

Don't get [FOREX] scammed! (Long post but worth the warning)

I bet Im not the only one who sees ads like this on Facebook.
LearnToTrade claims to be a Forex coaching company that was going to make you so rich, you'd throw your paperwork on your boss's face and buy a yacht next month. I was impressed as the venue for the free seminar was at a swanky building in BGC (sa ibabaw ng Lamborghini lol). One day, I saw one of their ads and because I had time to spare, I dragged my girlfriend along to check it out since we live around the area.
During the two-hour ordeal, all the speaker did was:
1) Put Greg Secker (their founder) on a pedestal of flowers. The guy appeared on a video which served as his "speech" and appeared to be messianic as fuck. There was something about the guy and the way he was reverred that was so unsettling. (More about him later)
2) Exaggerate on how genius traders their students turned out to be. (A 13yo is now trading millions monthly and lawyers quit being lawyers because they apparently realized they started earning more from trading because of what they learned from LearnToTrade)
3) Badmouth other trading companies. I couldn't keep track with how many times she lambasted COLfinancial (not even a Forex competitor) for ripping off arms and legs with their "ridiculous commissions". She asked if anybody in the room uses COLfinancial for trading stocks. I do but I decided to keep quiet to hear what she had to say. She was saying shit like "Imagine, 40% ng kinita ng pera nyo, sakanila mapupunta." That's when I realized nangbubullshit sya because the commission is only 0.25%. It could've been an honest mistake but...
4) Practically try to force us to "not hesitate" in enrolling at THREE-SESSION COACHING WORTH 90K. And wait, discounted na yan! Promo daw eh! So she said, when you start attending the classes, don't tell your classmates because they paid 400k daw for those classes. WTF?
5) Focus on the participants' desire for wealth. No remote feel that they were there to educate.
Although I was obviously not sold, I went home with a nagging feeling that I just wasted more than 2 hours of my life. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
They kept calling me for daysss (sayang I switched phones so di ko na maprovide yung call logs) trying to convince me to enroll. SUPER KULIT. I got so pissed, nagsungit na ko sa caller and started doing my research. Here are what I found out:
1) Greg Secker, the self-styled "internationally acclaimed" trading genius, was never even a trader. He was only affiliated with the big financial corporations that he LOVED to name-drop - as an employee.
2) For someone who claims his company can teach anyone to be really rich, the dude is allegedly operating at a loss.
3) His companies' incomes are mostly from the "enrolment fees" the more gullible trusting people throw in - not from actual effective trading.
And soooo much more sketchy stuff. Up to you to give them a chance. Here are some links to foreign articles about Greg Secker and LearnToTrade:
The Guardian article
BBC UK article
DailyMail UK exposé article
Greg Secker labeled as a "snake oil salesman" LOL
Quora forum
Philippine exposé vlog
And on and on...
It's surprising that even after getting exposed left and right, he's still able to stay in the business. Im not here to smear shit on LearnToTrade or call Greg Secker a charlatan, I just think you should at least know what you're getting into and not listen to someone sell alchemy. Total waste of time. I know somehow there are honest people in that company, but I think they can only be the naive ones.
PS: Just found out they're NOT registered with the SEC and was raided by the NBI as a syndicate halos last month lang. Hohoho. Pero may ads parin sa Facebook? Help me report pag may nakita kayo. :)

Boyfriend (21M) is lazy, does nothing, doesn't even look for jobs which is sending me (21M) and him over the edge slowly.

Hi all.
This is the 4th time I've tried to write this, and I $ you not, I've been writing for the last hour.
So I work full time, earning approx. £24k per year which is a bit over minimum wage.
My boyfriend used to have a job in another area around 100 miles away when he lived back at home however when we moved in together 5 months into the relationship he came with me.
3 month after moving in, he got a job at a local supermarket working 16hrs per week and said it's not somewhere he wants to stay forever, and it was okay for the start as he was getting plenty of overtime. Eventually he wanted to be working full time somewhere.
He has dreams and ambitions of having his own business, like a tattoo parlour, or a pub, or something like that. He has plans to travel the world and wants to do this all with me.
He does want to go to Uni, and for this he needs to resit a few of his exams which he keeps mentioning he wants to do.
Issue is, that around Feb/March 2019 he had to leave his job on medical grounds (couldn't lift heavy items anymore and this was his job).
Since then I started helping him apply for new jobs, at first he got a few interviews (video, phone and in person). The video interview he never did saying that the camera inverts the way he looks so he doesn't want to do it, the phone interviews he did all of them however he missed some as he slept through the day to stay up at night watching GoT etc., he had some in person interviews as well of which he went to one, and was unsuccessful, and since then hasn't been to one. He's had invites for a few more since but still hasn't gone to any.
I have even resorted asking my managers to put in a good work to recruitment to get him working where I am.
He really does want a full time sustainable job and is avoiding jobs such as cleaning, takeaways (McDonalds, KFC etc) which is fair enough, I don't have an issue with that.
When I say I helped him apply for jobs, I mean that I was doing all the applying for him, again which did not bother me at all at first.
It's not been 6 months going on 7 since he was unemployed. As mentioned I get around £24k per year which does leave us really short after bills, repayments on a few of my debts, food etc. is paid for. We're living from payday to payday and one month's wage will only last us 4 weeks, so the 5 week months we have to go a few days pretty much without food and rely on leftovers.
We agreed from day one of moving in to split the bills, which we initially did whilst he was working in the supermarket however eventually when things got difficult and he was stuck doing his part time contracted hours I told him I'd cover all the bills - again - didn't bother me. I see it as our money, not my money his money type of thing.
I am fortunate however that recently my parents have been paying for my shopping and also giving me some homemade food, so that's a monthly expense saved however most of that goes to the bills that I fell into arrears with (i.e. I'm in arrears with gas, electric, water, council tax, his phone bill is in arrears which I'm paying off). After all bills go out, we're left with pretty much £50-£80 emergency money (depending if TV license is due etc).
So, I'm fortunate that I'm able to keep the house afloat with the help of my parents for the nutritional aspect. The only thing food-wise I pay for is dog food as I don't want my parents to be feeding my dogs (makes me feel like a bit of a failure lol). As long as my dogs and my boyfriend are eating, I'm happy.
There's been days where we've been short on food with a day to go until the weekly shopping with my parents, I've lied to my boyfriend and said I've already eaten at work as there was a free buffet on (which work never have), just so he has the last bit of food as if I said to him I was hungry he would never agree to eat it.
Going back to the topic, it's been now 7 months since he's been unemployed. Total jobs applied for are around 100 (even though I was trying to aim for 5 jobs per day for me to apply for him, we all know that's hard whilst working full time as well).
He complains that I'm tired and want to sleep all the time, he complains that we never do anything fun, he stays up all night watching TV and playing video games whilst I'm asleep alone in bed (I don't think I've slept with him in the same bed for a few months now) with one of the dogs whilst he tends to the other.
He wants to be successful but I feel like he's honestly not doing anything about it? A few months ago I put my foot down and said that I'm not going to be helping him anymore as all the jobs I apply for there is some type of problem, and it won't feel the same because it's me doing it and not him so he won't even know what job it is if they ring him back! I told him to try and aim for 5 jobs per day. This was around 2-3 months ago I think. Since I told him this, he's probably applied for around 15-20 jobs in total (I'm thinking more around 10). When I ask him how the job hunt is going he gets defensive, saying that I'm putting him under a lot of pressure that he needs to find a job and he doesn't want any pressure.
I'm starting to think he's not the hard-working individual he proclaimed to be at the start of the relationship.
My week generally consists of waking up around 5am daily, studying the financial markets (search on Google for Forex) until around 7am. Then I start work between 8am-12pm and finish between 4pm-8pm depending on the shift I'm on (it's 7 hour shifts). After I get home, I do tend to carry on studying, reading books, researching on the financial markets as this is what I aspire to be in the future (a full time private currency trader).
He knows all this and sees me working all the time and he says that I work hard and he's proud of me however it makes me feel selfish, and guilty in fact, that I don't feel the same back to him? I've told him even if he volunteered somewhere that's a start as at least he wouldn't be home all day.
He suffers with some mental health issues and so do I in fact. Mine are financially related, struggling to provide for my own household sends me under. We used to have a car and went for daily adventures when things were good. We both miss this.
I miss him.
Again... I'm going off of topic!!! Let's get back to the job situation. He had one response from a job application around a week ago that gave him an in person interview after a successful telephone interview however they withdrew the a few days before his in person interview. I told him not to worry and that there was going to plenty more, he didn't sound too bothered by it but I do think he was upset as he liked the sound of the job.
I want him to get a job and I sometimes feel like grabbing his head and shaking it to put it right lol! I don't want him to feel under pressure but at the same time I want him to understand that he needs to find one as we're relying on other people for essentials at the minute. He wants a good life and I want to be able to start saving money so I can start my Forex trading career as well eventually.
That's the money side of things.
The other side of things is the emotional side. He's deteriorating emotionally and he won't accept this. He's losing the plot and I've told him this. He'll go angry over the smallest things. For example if I was to accidentally slam the door shut (i.e. put more force onto it when not needed because I'm thinking the window is shut when it's open) he'll comment on it. He never used to do this. Same door, same window. He won't leave the house for weeks at times. I have to force him to sometimes. When he wants something (i.e. a snack or a soft-drink) he'll ask me to go across the road (literally 10 steps away) to get it. Leaving it my choice to decide what he eats and drinks. When I tell him he should go and get some fresh air at the same time, he doesn't want to as he's not confident in his own body (he tans, and I've told him not to put as much on whilst we can't afford to buy new ones whenever he needs it, more-so when we can). He'll get a bit annoyed over small things like the pillow on the sofa not being in the right place after I've sat on it and just got off - or if I was in a rush in the morning and left the ironing board out, or had not done the bed up or accidentally left the foot towel on the floor without moving it onto the radiator after I've had a shower. He'll wake up around 4-5-6pm, and then complain that I don't see him or speak to him when I get home and go back to studying and reading what I am doing, even though I'm sat right next to him. I tend to try and sleep as late as I can so I can at least get some time with him even if it's 30-45 mins. Sometimes this is as late as 1:30am, of which you can understand if I wake up at 5am including weekends I'm getting lack of sleep, but I'm used to it so it doesn't bother me really.
All I want is for him to be happy, and for him not to go insane. Even right now, the last time he left the house was.... I can't remember. Perhaps weekend before last weekend when he walked the dog (which I had to practically force him to do).
Props to him he does do most of the housework. He hoovers the most, does the dishes the most, does the washing up the most, lets the dogs out to the toilet the most. I do the money-making, feeding the dogs, the cooking and the ironing. But these aren't limited, we can swap or one of us can do it all one time at the agreement the other will do it all or whatever surplus there was next time.
He's getting settled for this life, a life that we're both not used to but he's settling for it. And I don't want him to. It's killing him on the inside.
I've even tried to explain that if we ever have an unexpected bill, god forbid, how will we afford it? I've sold everything in the house that I could possibly sell to make some extra money. We've literally got a TV, sofa, Xbox, bed, kitchen appliances and two laptops (one that I do my studies one and the other that used to be my brother's that he [boyfriend] uses to play games and watch Netflix - doesn't use to apply for jobs as doesn't have Word on it for CV which is fair enough). I leave my laptop at home all day and have everything logged on for him overnight so he can apply for jobs either whilst he's awake whilst I'm asleep or whilst I'm at work.
So my question/advice is... how should I motivate him to apply for jobs, how should I go about it whilst keeping into account everything that he doesn't want to feel (under pressure etc.)? How do I explain to him that it will actually give us a better life that we're both used to? How can I explain to him that without him having a job, all of our plans, our ambitions, our goals, our travelling will never happen?
Please, if anything else needs explaining or I've not covered anything do not hesitate to ask. I do not take offence to anything whatsoever.
Thank you guys in advance, I hope some ideas can come to light for myself and anyone else in my situation.
Best regards,
X

Do people modify stop losses to be in the positive values after it has moved a certain amount your way but not yet reached the expected target?

So I'm learning forex :) Did some analysis. Logged in expecting to see either a big gain or a small loss but saw neither. Instead I'm about $100 up (which for my practice $100k account, that's about 0.1%).
My question at this stage is, do I: (1) move my stop loss so that I don't lose any money in the worst case scenario or (2) do I keep everything as is and wait for it to do what I was hoping for?
To provide a bit more context, it went up from being below my MA's to hitting what was a support level in the past but now it's looking like a resistance level.

European Commission - Press release Antitrust: Commission fines Barclays, RBS, Citigroup, JPMorgan and MUFG €1.07 billion for participating in foreign exchange spot trading cartel Brussels, 16 May 2019
In two settlement decisions, the European Commission has fined five banks for taking part in two cartels in the Spot Foreign Exchange market for 11 currencies - Euro, British Pound, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, US, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian Dollars, and Danish, Swedish and Norwegian crowns.
The first decision (so-called “Forex - Three Way Banana Split” cartel) imposes a total fine of €811 197 000 on Barclays, The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Citigroup and JPMorgan.
The second decision (so-called “Forex- Essex Express” cartel) imposes a total fine of €257 682 000 on Barclays, RBS and MUFG Bank (formerly Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi).
UBS is an addressee of both decisions, but was not fined as it revealed the existence of the cartels to the Commission.
Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy said:“Companies and people depend on banks to exchange money to carry out transactions in foreign countries. Foreign exchange spot trading activities are one of the largest markets in the world, worth billions of euros every day. Today we have fined Barclays, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Citigroup, JPMorgan and MUFG Bank and these cartel decisions send a clear message that the Commission will not tolerate collusive behaviour in any sector of the financial markets. The behaviour of these banks undermined the integrity of the sector at the expense of the European economy and consumers”.
Foreign Exchange, or “Forex”, refers to the trading of currencies. When companies exchange large amounts of a certain currency against another, they usually do so through a Forex trader. The main customers of Forex traders include asset managers, pension funds, hedge funds, major companies and other banks.
Forex spot order transactions are meant to be executed on the same day at the prevailing exchange rate. The most liquid and traded currencies worldwide (five of which are used in the European Economic Area) are the Euro, British Pound, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, US, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian Dollars, and Danish, Swedish and Norwegian crowns.
The Commission's investigation revealed that some individual traders in charge of Forex spot trading of these currencies on behalf of the relevant banks exchanged sensitive information and trading plans, and occasionally coordinated their trading strategies through various online professional chatrooms.
The commercially sensitive information exchanged in these chatrooms related to:
1) outstanding customers' orders (i.e. the amount that a client wanted to exchange and the specific currencies involved, as well as indications on which client was involved in a transaction),
2) bid-ask spreads (i.e. prices) applicable to specific transactions,
3) their open risk positions (the currency they needed to sell or buy in order to convert their portfolios into their bank's currency), and
4) other details of current or planned trading activities.
The information exchanges, following the tacit understanding reached by the participating traders, enabled them to make informed market decisions on whether to sell or buy the currencies they had in their portfolios and when.
Occasionally, these information exchanges also allowed the traders to identify opportunities for coordination, for example through a practice called “standing down” (whereby some traders would temporarily refrain from trading activity to avoid interfering with another trader within the chatroom).
Most of the traders participating in the chatrooms knew each other on a personal basis - for example, one chatroom was called Essex Express ‘n the Jimmy because all the traders but “James” lived in Essex and met on a train to London. Some of the traders created the chatrooms and then invited one another to join, based on their trading activities and personal affinities, creating closed circles of trust.
The traders, who were direct competitors, typically logged in to multilateral chatrooms on Bloomberg terminals for the whole working day, and had extensive conversations about a variety of subjects, including recurring updates on their trading activities.
The Commission's investigation revealed the existence of two separate infringements concerning foreign exchange spot trading:
The following table details the participation and the duration of each company's involvement in each of the two infringements:

Would I win if I Seek Judgement for the Below:

Hi UK Legal Redditors, Thanks for all your help so far with my troubles, summary:
A 'professional' Forex trader who promised to teach me how to trade by logging into my account and making trades lost every penny of the money I put in *£35k. On a number of occasions I asked him to stop and said I was happy to break even and leave, he kept trading and oh well... the account went to £0.... There is a whole lot of context I have left out but please bare with me. (Yes it was a bad idea etc etc. We've been through this on many threads already).
My Question: After confronting this gentleman he agreed that he messed up and claimed (on email) that he would make it right, he put together a payment plan and even promised additional interest for the trouble.
1) He has put this in writing and on email
2) He has acknowledged that this was not managed correctly and he made mistakes
3) Another trader (on email) said he was reckless and practically gambling with my money
4) He has paid back £1000 already last week and another is due this week
5) After more in depth research, although he works for a financial management firm he is not FCA or CFA accredited
Does the fact he has written an offer via email and I has paid back in accordance with those terms mean we are in an agreement? Is there any way he can wiggle his way out like he tried the last time? IF I need to get a judgement in county court will this be sufficient evidence along with emails from him and payments?
Please save the, "what a stupid idea" and the likes, this has been extremely stressful, the guy has wiped out hald of my savings at a time where I was looking for a mentor.

Global Visionariez and IML My 30 day Experience

To summarize my experience with the "product." It is 99.9% stalling and wasting your time with shit like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za3tUUoj2iQ and hyping their own products. Dudes acting like "whaaaaaaaa" and showing phone screens with profits. Facebook is flooded with these people showing off how their boy "[insert name here]" is selling money and yada yada. Most of the content they post and host is just recruitment hype videos to bring more people in. Seriously... Like all day every day it felt like. Most the videos feature some hipsters and text screenshots of them being like: "OMG I gots some mad pips brah, 100 million pipz lulz #winning [intense sarcasm]."
Do yourself a favor and unfriend anyone who tries to sell you this shit. Because they are not your friend, and they view you as a $35 a month paycheck if you sign up. Most the common stuff you see in groups is people touting the wins, but don't fool yourself... Everyone is keeping their losses quiet because no one wants to make a fool out of themselves. I mean who makes videos of them watching someone else in video chat? Someone who doesn't know what the hell their doing or how to work technology... Which they happen to have some miracle program that will "change" your life. Oh, and the haters, HA you should just ignore them because they all don't like grape koolaide.
TL:DR Oh, look ma some YOLO saying swag fags are saying they can teach me to make mad bread. But it is just a job selling a job selling jobs to other people who in turn will be selling said jobs to others who will do the same.

Gold Digger Trading BOT | Sept.15th 2015 REVIEW | Who’s digging what from who? | Mining for Truth

Don’t get a pick-axe stuck in the back of your head by not reading this article in full. This review could save you, or break you financially. Don't touch this product until you have completed this read!
Unless you are a full-time Forex or Binary Options trader, trading into the wee early hours of the morning can wear you down. Hence the invention of auto-trading, trading-bot software products. You sleep whilst they work for you, with money generation in mind opposed to money degradation as the case may be.

You may have had the experience in the past using auto-trading software to provide for you with a ROI (Return ON Investment), such as OptionBot2 or Michael Freeman's Auto Trading software, another highly rated ITM (In The Money) provider. Other auto-traders have proven to be quite defective, not even providing a ROI (Return OF Investment). Let’s not go there, wasting time and depress those readers who have already traveled down that scorching road. If you haven’t had such misfortune to date, just so you are not blindsided, be aware of a few existing Auto-Trading BOTs, paraded scams currently at play within the Binary Options industry. i.e. Binary Boom Rock The Stock The 50k Mission, the list goes on.

Quick View DETAILS:

Industry:..........Binary Options Website Link:...Gold Digger Promotion Product:...........Automated trading system Release Date:...16th September 2015

Moving right along, a product certainly worth a mention, a new auto-trading system, Gold Digger. Gold Digger is a very hot product right now on the internet. “Come on, how good is it, really?” I hear you ask. With the official launch just a day away now, claims have been made that this auto-trader has technically exploded into a hemisphere of its own, scientifically providing performance like no other, i.e. other rival bots are like a child toy and pale in comparison. Very high claims I say, however on closer inspection this product has two fold benefits as it turns out.

I have traded binary options for over two years now, I initially lost allot of money and learn allot both in theory and practice, wising up along the way. I’m happy to say I am now a profitable trader. If you are new or an existing Binary Options Trader and would like to fast track your learning curve and path, Gold Digger could be the product for you. Don’t take my word for it, do you own research, below is a link providing you with statistics relating to the Gold Digger auto trading software.

The next link below provides you with more information surrounding Gold Digger discover the people, the brains, the brawn and history behind this incredible product. There is a free licence available for you. Blowing past all of the hype, having tested this product consistency and reliability is way up there comparative to other bots on the market. With this limited time offer there really is little to lose and everything to gain. Checkout Gold Digger for yourself whilst you can.

WARNING Advice:

1. Always remember when testing out any new trading ventures, manual or automatic, make sure you have a money management plan, once you have a strategy in place stick with it.

2. A FREE trading DEMO account is a great way to test out new strategies so you don’t go bust in the process.
3. Not all brokers are made equal when it comes to great customer service, being able to withdraw funds, having a user friendly, easy to use trading platform to work with. I have traded with a countless number of brokers, some I have had nightmare experiences. I prefer to trade only using industry regulated brokers tick all the boxes, as above ( I have listed these below). If you are not sure, try out one of the brokers listed below, do a background check as required, they will provide you with a demo account on request.

TRIED & TRUSTED BROKERS:

Your Trading System - Persevere or Pivot?

Hi again /Forex, this is Part 5 of my 6 part series on creating your own trading system. The other posts are up here on reddit too if you want to catch up. Let me know what you think.
Please note all the advice below is directed at very specific issues that you may run into when using your system and then adjusting it based on your results. Your job is to be creative with your solutions to your weaknesses and always demand more from yourself. Be awesome and stand apart from your peers. Demand success.
Have you heard of the word "pivot" when referring to tech startups? If not, it simply means that a certain business idea is having a hard time gaining traction and the company has therefore decided to "pivot" away, meaning they're starting again from scratch with a new product or simply reinventing the old product in a new way.
Often in trading you’ll find the new guys are constantly "pivoting" to the point where they're dizzy and confused. Pivots are well and good when justified but how can we as traders justify the need to pivot? When should we simply persevere with what we've been doing?
Great questions, thanks for asking them you handsome devil!
The answer is:
When in doubt, persevere (and tweak).
Easy! Alright article over.
Seriously though, if you haven't read my previous articles I'd recommend you do so now before we get too deep into this topic. As a quick recap, so far on your developmental journey you should have:
*Developed a foundation trading system based on your beliefs and experiences.
*Created basic guidelines as to how you're going to trade in different market conditions.
*Made a commitment to track your trades like the trading machine you are.
And you're doing all those things wonderfully aren't you?? Great!
Now, let's say we've been tracking our trades for a few weeks now and we've had strings of winners, losers and in-betweeners and we're now ready to step back and see how we're going. We're seeing some patterns and some inconsistencies and it's time to do something about it.
If you've read the last article, you'll know what we're looking for when observing our trades. To summarise, we're especially interested in.
*Win percentages.
*Average reward : risk outcome of your trades.
*The market conditions that each trade was taken in.
*How well you followed your rules in each trade.
These are the cornerstones of your consistent success and we'll be judging (and tweaking) our systems based on these outcomes.
Now, let's look at each point and some I’ll make some suggestions for altering your foundation trading system in order to overcome their weaknesses.
Win Percentages
Higher win percentages (above 50%) are a huge psychological boon to most developing traders but their importance must always be balanced against the context of reward : risk, which we'll discuss next.
Look at the current win percentage of your foundation trading system, what are your thoughts? How has it impacted you emotionally? If you're breaking even with a low win percentage, it means you're getting great reward : risk opportunities which is FANTASTIC. The problem with this is a psychological one as lower win percentages can mean longer losing streaks and therefore larger account draw-down.
You need to make a call as to whether you're ok with this for the long term or if you want to adjust your system to increase your win percentages and perhaps give up some profit potential as a result. Unfortunately it's incredibly difficult to have both a high win percentage and a high reward to risk system and you need to make the call with which you’d prefer to focus on.
Just be realistic and focus on incremental improvements.
In the scenario that you're making decent profits when you're right but you're also right a little bit less than you're comfortable with, you need to go back and look at your trading log and screenshots, looking for the following things:
*How would a larger stop loss have affected the outcomes of your trades? Would the extra "breathing room" have impacted your trading positively or not?
*What were the market conditions like in both your winners and losers? Do you notice that losses coincide with sideways markets? If so, how would you filter those trades in the future? Are you constantly trading counter trend, trying to catch little bounces opposite current market sentiment?
*Could you have managed your profit taking in a more efficient manner? What if you'd moved stops after price moved x amount of pips away?
These are all great questions to be asking yourself after a nice big batch of trading. When you have the answers to the questions, you need to be creative in how you'll incorporate those improvements into your plan.
Once you've added some new filters or adjusted some old ones, it's time to re-test and see how your changes impact your profitability!
Always moving forwards and getting better. Change your mindset to one of learning and control, rather than helplessness and indecision and you’ll be years ahead of your fellow traders.
Average Reward : Risk
This number goes hand in hand with your win percentage. Like I said above, you probably can't have both numbers as high as you'd like. This is an unfortunate reality that can take a long time to completely sink in.
Alright, we discussed the questions we might ask if we have a system that has a low win % but a high reward : risk ratio, but what if our reward: risk is in need of help in order to improve our edge? What might we be looking for to improve our system?
The most common causes of a shitty reward: risk ratio are often:
*Your stop loss is only a "OH SHIT" protector. This can be absolutely fine with the right system in place but make sure your system is up to the challenge.
*Trading counter trend or in slow sideways markets. In these scenarios you've got to give yourself some big wiggle room to catch the retracement or bounce and even then, the nature of a retracement means you're simply not catching big moves.
*You get scared or anxious once in profit. This is an absolute deal breaker. If you can't let your winners run with some strict rules in place, you need to start developing some skills that will help you do so.
These are all fine and fixable so no need to worry. What's important is that you're identifying your weaknesses and improving them. Now, the solution to the above issues seems obvious enough doesn't it?
*Consider moving your initial stop loss to a place where your setup and initial setup theory has been proven wrong, rather than only protecting against "holy shit" moments.
*Consider trading with current market sentiment rather than against it. I know it's fun to catch tops and bottoms but simply look at a chart and see where the money is being made. Is it by catching huge impulsive moves in strong trends or looking for bounces? Trends tend to be much more lucrative, it's really as simple as that.
*Scared or anxious once in profit? You're going to have to practice your way out. If you're trading live, stop. If you can't stop, trade with the smallest lot size your broker will let you use. Make solid rules to lean against in order to create confidence, process and habit in your trading.
There will be many other scenarios that might be impacting your reward : risk ratio but what's important is that you identify what they are by leaning on your super high quality journal and screenshots that you're keeping ever so diligently!
Market Conditions
What was the market sentiment during your winning trades and losing trades? Were you more profitable trading WITH market sentiment or AGAINST it? Don’t overcomplicate this.
Don’t overcomplicate your definition of market sentiment either. Price is either going up, sideways or down. It's doing those things either slowly or quickly. Work out which works for your system and focus on those.
Remember, all we’re doing in this process is building on your strengths and eliminate your weaknesses, both in your system and in your mind.
Following Your Rules
What percentage of your trades met your systems requirements with 100% accuracy? If you eliminated the trades that didn't meet your requirements, how much different would the outcome have been over your sample size?
As per the last article, remember:
When in doubt, create a rule.
Not sure what you should be doing? Create a rule. It doesn't matter what it is, you can adjust later if it needs improving. What's important is that you have a place to improve from.
So What?
I guess the overall message is this: Persevere with your system and make adjustments based on its weaknesses and strengths. Making some big trades but your win percentage is too low? Go back and look for patterns why that's the case. In almost all cases you should be able to see patterns in both your winners and losers when looking at a big enough sample size.
During this tweaking process, you need to also qualify the importance and quality of your “concepts” that you’re using in your foundation trading system. If you’re trading based on candlestick price action and a particular part of that concept isn’t working, experiment with it. Adjust that one factor and re-test for another two weeks or 20 trades and see how it works out. What were the strengths of the new system? Where did it seam weaker?
In case you haven’t gathered yet, it’s also important that you run these tests in stages. You cannot be changing your system every other day based on your perceived results and expect to get better. It doesn’t work like that. Challenge yourself to take 20, 30, 40 trades before you consider the quality of your system. Don’t adjust ANYTHING even during a 10 trade losing streak. Just keep sticking to your rules and LEARN.
What if you’re completely unhappy with your results and your system isn't resonating with you?
Maybe it's time for you to pivot.
You NEED to feel comfortable with a system and that should be the case since you created your system from scratch starting from Part One. If you've created your system from scratch but HATE using it, it might be time for a change.
You're not going to continually and diligently improve something that you hate to use, so it's best you create another foundation trading system on which to build on.
What if you LIKE trading with your foundation trading system but you're not sure where to go from here? You can't identify any clear patterns based on win percentage, reward : risk, market sentiment or your rules? Leave a message in the comments and I'm sure some fellow traders might have some suggestions.
It's possible you've got a lemon foundation trading system but it's also possible you've got a FANTASTIC foundation on which you'll build consistency and success. Remember, when in doubt, persevere. Your system can always be improved and by doing so you'll create an even better understanding and bond with it. You'll know how it performs in specific market conditions because you've seen it before.
You're far beyond most traders at this point and you've been confirmed for being awesome, so well done.
In the next article I'll discuss some education suggestions if you're not even at a point where you can create your own foundation trading system and you’re not sure what resonates with you and what doesn't. Please let me know how you've found this series so far, I greatly appreciate any feedback, good or bad.
All the best,
