Fourth Race Back Theory: Fact Or Fiction: You Decide!

I have said for many years that a horse fourth race back after a break from serious training is their most important start and can identify many winners for anyone willing to watch and take note. I went back and looked at the results of the Ky Derbies since 1980 and apparently most trainers also feels the same way.
But the trend changed in the last ten years or so and now a lot of winners are doing it in their third start. But most of them are doing little or nothing after the Ky Derby and even less after the TC races are over. I believe it is because most of them do not have enough experience to face such a demanding trio of races, especially since they have not fully mature and are still growing.
But I have listed every derby winner and second place finishers and their finishes as a 3 YO heading into the derby. While I use this angle mostly for lower class races, the results of the derby spoke volumes to me. But I will let each of you decide what is best for you as an individual. I have totally different betting ideas than most and only offering others an insight to what I consider important.
FYI: Both Secretariat and Seattle Slew was making their 4th start of their 3 YO season in the Ky Derby. Affirmed and Alydar was both making their fifth start of their 3 YO season in the Ky Derby.

My full Belmont Stakes Analysis

Edit: Epicharis scratched which really impacts odds. There would have been a lot of money on him, particularly from Japan. That means you're not likely to get the price you want on most horses.
First a quick summary of each horse, then how I expect each to run, then how I expect the race to play. Finally, some thoughts on bets.
1 Twisted Tom: Good breeding with Giant’s Causeway as the grandsire and Thunder Gulch as the damsire. Should be able to handle the distance. Speed figures so far are well below what it will take to win this race. Taking a huge step up in class having faced only one foe who’s ever run in a Graded Stakes race. The win two back returned no winners next out. Coming in off 3 straight wins and is working well.
2 Tapwrit: From the strong breeding line of Tapit (from Pulpit from A.P. Indy), but damsire had most success as a sprinter. Had a strong win in the Tampa Bay Derby, but wasn’t really flattered by the rest of the field in their next race, although the show horse won the Pat Day Mile two races later. Very unimpressive showing in the Blue Grass before a middling 6th place finish in the Derby.
3 Gormley: Grandsire is A.P. Indy while dam was primarily a turf horse. Won a very slow Santa Anita Derby two back before not showing up in the Kentucky Derby and finishing 9th. Field in the SA Derby hasn’t really flattered him with only minor success since. Beyer speed figure has fallen each of the last three races since a career high when winning the G3 Sham.
4 J Boys Echo: Great breeding from Mineshaft who is from A.P. Indy. And damsire Menifee also showed Triple Crown success. Boasts the field’s best career Beyer from a win in the G3 Gotham three back. Defeated Preakness winner Cloud Computing by 3 ½ lengths in that race. Bumped badly and shut off two back and then closed off while making his move late. And then wiped out at the start of the Derby when Irish War Cry crashed down. Strong 5f works coming into the race with a 5-week rest.
5 Hollywood Handsome: Grandsire is Tapit so his line goes back to AP Indy, but it’s a bit more distant. He has a generally improving speed profile over his last five races with his career best Beyer last out, although that’s still below what’s likely going to be needed to win the Belmont. Has finished just 4th and 5th in two graded stakes attempts. Is coming off a win in a 50K ALW, but that field has not flattered him since.
6 Looking At Lee: Sire is Preakness winner Looking At Lucky, but no immediate Belmont success in bloodline. Second in the Derby and 4th in the Preakness, bringing the most success in the field from the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Has yet to win a race since a minor stakes race last August. Career best Beyer came in the Derby, but this is his 3rd race in just 5 weeks. Has the most career races in the field (11), but only 2 career wins. Switched to jockey Irad Ortiz, Belmont’s leading jockey.
7 Irish War Cry: Sire is Preakness winner and Belmont runner-up Curlin. Wins in the Holy Bull and the Wood were among the most impressive in the field with the only triple digit Beyers other than J Boys Echo in the Gotham. Delivered a complete dud in the Fountain of Youth in between impressive wins and then delivered another weak showing last out in the Derby after breaking in aggressively and crashing down on foes and then weakening late. Has shown the ability to bounce back after a poor showing.
8 Senior Investment: Grandsire is the impressive Mineshaft. Improving speed profile in first 5 career races including a win in the G3 Lexington two back and then a show in the Preakness. Rallied late in each of the last two races and looks like a one-run closer.
9 Meantime: Sire is Preakness winner Shackleford, but no immediate Belmont success in bloodline. Improving speed figure each of last two races. Finished 2nd in only race vs. winners last time out in the G3 Peter Pan. It’s not yet clear how impressive that field was, but only horse in the field with experience on this track.
10 Multiplier: No noticeable Triple Crown success in breeding. Won G3 Illinois Derby two back rallying late, but hasn’t been flattered by field’s subsequent races. Never threatened in the Preakness finishing 6th. Adding blinkers for the first time.
11 Epicharis (Jpn): Grandsire is Derby and Preakness winner Sunday Silence. Won first four starts in Japan before finishing second by a nose in the G2 UAE Derby. First race in the U.S. Has only worked once and it was unimpressive. Some medical questions going into the race. SCRATCHED
12 Patch: Sire is Belmont winner Union Rags and damsire is super-horse A.P. Indy. Speed figures in four career races well below what’s needed to win this. Career best race is 2nd in the G2 Louisiana Derby two back. Finished well back in the Kentucky Derby after breaking from the 20th post.
Early speed will likely come from 7 Irish War Cry and 11 Epicharis. 1 Twisted Tom and 9 Meantime will get out early as well, but should fade. 2 Tapwrit, 3 Gormley, 4 J Boys Echo and 12 Patch will likely be in the second pack looking to make first run on leaders. 5 Hollywood Handsome and 10 Multiplier will be off the pace and never threaten. 6 Lookin at Lee and 8 Senior Investment will be closing late.
Most likely result is Irish War Cry is up close early, maybe just off horses like Meantime and Epicharis. He’ll pass those horses coming out of the second turn and draw off in the stretch to win, holding off the mid-pack ralliers and the late closers. Whoever among Tapwrit, Gormley, J Boys Echo or Patch gets the best trip will give Irish War Cry a challenge in the stretch, but come up short, I'm going with Tapwrit. Senior Investment will make that late run once again on the far outside to get up for show. J Boys Echo rallying late will fill out the super.
I'll put Irish War Cry on top of a few exactas and trifectas. If J Boys Echo stays around 15-1 or higher, I'll place some win/place bets and put him on top and bottom of some exactas.
