Price Discovery in Bitcoin exchange

About thirty days ago I shared a chart on Price Discovery in this sub. There was a lot of interest in it and I promised to explain in detail a Bitcoin price discovery algorithm.. I do so in this post.
*this text post is a slightly shorter version of what I wrote in my blog.

TL;DR

I applied price discovery algorithms to 5 Min OHLCV data from Bitmex and CME contracts and Bitstamp, Coinbase, HitBTC, Kraken, Poloniex, Binance, and OkEx BTCUSD/BTCUSDT markets from March 2016 to May 2020. Some exciting results I got was:

Introduction

Price discovery is the overall process of setting the price of an asset. Price discovery algorithms identify the leader exchanges whose traders define the price. Two approaches are most famous for use in Price Discovery. Gonzalo and Granger (1995) and Hasbrouck (1995). But they assume random walk, and a common efficient price. I do not feel comfortable assuming random walk and common efficient price in Bitcoin Markets. So I used this little know method by De Blasis (2019) for this analysis. This work assumes that "the fastest price to reflect new information releases a price signal to the other slower price series." I thought this was valid in our market. It uses Markov Chains to measure Price Discovery. Without going into the mathematical details the summary steps used was:
De Blasis (2019) names this number Price Leadership Share (PLS). High PLS indicates a large role in price discovery. As the sum of the numbers is 1, they can be looked at as a percentage contribution. I recommend reading the original paper if you are interested to know more about the mathematical detail.

Data

Andersen (2000) argues that 5 Minute window provides the best trade-off between getting enough data and avoiding noise. In one of the first work on Bitcoin's Price Discovery, Brandvold et al. 2015 had used 5M window. So I obtained 5M OHLCV data using the following sources:
Futures data are different from other data because multiple futures contract trades at the same time. I formed a single data from the multiple time series by selecting the nearest contract until it was three days from expiration. I used the next contract when the contract was three days from expiration. This approach was advocated by Booth et al ( 1999 )

Analysis

I can't embed the chart on reddit so open this https://warproxxx.github.io/static/price_discovery.html
In the figure above, each colored line shows the total influence the exchange had towards the discovery of Bitcoin Price on that day. Its axis is on the left. The black line shows a moving average of the bitcoin price at the close in Bitfinex for comparison. The chart was created by plotting the EMA of price and dominance with a smoothing factor of 0.1. This was done to eliminate the noise. Let's start looking from the beginning. We start with a slight Bitfinex dominance at the start. When the price starts going up, Bitfinex's influence does too. This was the time large Tether printing was attributed to the rise of price by many individuals. But Bitfinex's influence wanes down as the price starts rising (remember that the chart is an exponential moving average. Its a lagging indicator). Afterward, exchanges like Binance and Bitstamp increase their role, and there isn't any single leader in the run. So although Bitfinex may have been responsible for the initial pump trades on other exchanges were responsible for the later rally.
CME contracts were added to our analysis in February 2018. Initially, they don't have much influence. On a similar work Alexandar and Heck (2019) noted that initially CBOE contracts had more influence. CBOE later delisted Bitcoin futures so I couldn't get that data. Overall, Bitmex and CME contracts have been averaging around 50% of the role in price discovery. To make the dominance clear, look at this chart where I add Bitmex Futures and Perp contract's dominance figure to create a single dominance index. There bitmex leads 936 of the total 1334 days (Bitfinex leads 298 days and coinbase and binance get 64 and 6 days). That is a lot. One possible reason for this might be Bitmex's low trading fee. Bitmex has a very generous -0.025% maker fee and price discovery tend to occur primarily in the market with smaller trading costs (Booth et al, 1999). It may also be because our market is mature. In mature markets, futures lead the price discovery.

Days Lead 571 501 102 88 34 12 8 7 6 4 1
 Table 1: Days Lead
Out of 1334 days in the analysis, Bitmex futures leads the discovery in 571 days or nearly 43% of the duration. Bitfinex leads for 501 days. Bitfinex's high number is due to its extreme dominance in the early days.

Table 2: Correlation between the close price and Exchange's dominance index
Binance, Huobi, CME, and OkCoin had the most significant correlation with the close price. Bitmex, Coinbase, Bitfinex, and Bitstamp's dominance were negatively correlated. This was very interesting. To know more, I captured a yearwise correlation.

Table 3: Yearwise Correlation between the close price and Exchange's dominance index
Price movement is pretty complicated. If one factor, like a dominant exchange, could explain it, everyone would be making money trading. With this disclaimer out of the way, let us try to make some conclusions. This year Bitfinex, Huobi, and OkEx, Tether based exchanges, discovery power have shown a high correlation with the close price. This means that when the traders there become successful, price rises. When the traders there are failing, Bitmex traders dominate and then the price is falling. I found this interesting as I have been seeing the OkEx whale who has been preceding price rises in this sub. I leave the interpretation of other past years to the reader.

Limitations

My analysis does not include market data for other derivative exchanges like Huobi, OkEx, Binance, and Deribit. So, all future market's influence may be going to Bitmex. I did not add their data because they started having an impact recently. A more fair assessment may be to conclude this as the new power of derivative markets instead of attributing it as the power of Bitmex. But Bitmex has dominated futures volume most of the time (until recently). And they brought the concept of perpetual swaps.

Conclusion

There is a lot in this data. If you are making a trading algo think there is some edge here. Someday I will backtest some trading logic based on this data. Then I will have more info and might write more. But, this analysis was enough for to shift my focus from a Bitfinex based trading algorithm to a Bitmex based one. It has been giving me good results.
If you have any good ideas that you want me to write about or discuss further please comment. If there is enough interest in this measurement, I can setup a live interface that provides the live value.

Buying crypto on eToro - short review (USA resident)

I got the green light from my wife to put some more money into crypto not too long ago. When the market tanked I wanted a quick way to deposit. I looked for an exchange that would allow me to link my bank account for lower fees and quicker loads. Coinbase is not an option for me, I was banned for there years ago, they would never tell me why but I assume it is for sending BTC to a place they weren’t happy with. Kraken, Bittrex, Bitstamp - they all are wire only. I wanted to try Vertbase but for some reason they had some rules that I did not like. Can’t remember what it is now but it was a complete deal breaker - you can’t just buy some bitcoin and send it away easily. I came across eToro and learned they can hook up with your bank, and they didn’t have the same weird rules as Vertbase, so I gave it a try. I will not five too deep into the platform, as I did not use many features, but here are some points I would like to share: - Verification was super easy, required no photos, and I am genuinely surprised I have my btc on my ledger without further identity steps. Not sure what the limits are, I bought less than 1 BTC. - I was able to begin trading extremely fast. Within minutes of initiating my first deposit, I was able to trade. The exact amount that was debuted from my bank account showed up in my eToro account, no fees. - They have two ways to initiate an order - “trade” and “order”. Trade mentioned leverage, and on the initial screen would not let me adjust the buy price. Perhaps there was a screen somewhere to enable advanced options but I was not interested in that. “Order” allowed you to name the price your order would fill. There is no order book or chart, it is very simple. - Going to the order screen from the price/stats page would display a bitcoin price of .75% higher. Other crypto’s have varied spreads, or fees, with BTC the lowest. This is a pretty good fee, especially when your deposit was free. - In order to withdraw my BTC, I had to create a wallet, which is a separate app. You then have to initiate a withdraw, which cost .0005 BTC. Unfortunately if you laddered your buys as I did - the app treats every individual sale as individual, so each one incurred a .0005 BTC fee to withdraw to my wallet. That kind of sucked, I had 6 or 7 orders. - I received my BTC in my wallet the next day. The wallet advertises that they keep your private keys so it’s so easy and safe- you log in with your regular account name and password. So not a good idea to store there. - Once in that wallet I immediately attempted to withdraw to my ledger. This was frustrating as it displayed the fee to withdraw, which wasn’t too bad, so I subtracted it from my total and tried to withdraw. It appeared to work but then going back to my account it said it failed due to insufficient funds for fees. I tried to withdraw about 4 more times, and on the last attempt, I was getting worried that this was going to turn into a problem, but it went through. Kind of annoying they don’t tell you how much you need, as now I have a few dollars left sitting there, went too far, and I’ll probably never retrieve it. But voila, I checked the block explorer and literally less than a couple minutes my transaction was there and the balance showed at the address, albeit the transaction still needed to be confirmed. I checked hours later and my btc is safe on my ledger. - eToro claims you cannot withdraw crypto until after 25 days after your initial deposit, but I was able to a week after my first deposit.
All in all - eToro had a big learning curve to understand how to use it. I did not find it intuitive in the least. But I am truly amazed at the low cost and speed at which I was able to both deposit and withdraw. I spent a week buying and selling a little, I wonder how fast I could have gone from deposit to withdraw had I just bought one order and immediately attempted the withdraw.
Takes awhile to figure out but if you are a USA resident, want a cheap and easy way to buy some crypto, definitely worth a look.
P.S. - I both started a ticket and a chat when attempting to withdraw the btc to my ledger, as the platform said my USD withdraw was pending. I was scared it wouldn’t work. But it was just they way they do it. Very complicated in some ways. Submitting the ticket said it would be up to 7 days to get a response so I started a chat. Took about an hour for representative to come online but she was helpful. I had an email a few hours later from support answering my ticket question. So customer service was adequate.

DON’T PANIC. The Guide To The Current Situation In The Cryptogalaxy

DON’T PANIC. The Guide To The Current Situation In The Cryptogalaxy
In the last month, the world markets are experiencing dramatic events. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, an economic crisis is unfolding in the world. Because of quarantine actions across the world, many manufactures and non-food stores are being closed, the level of product turnover is falling. Small and medium-sized businesses suffer huge losses due to downtime, the unemployment rate increases and the purchasing power, in the opposite, decreases.
The value of the CBOE VIX index, reflecting the level of market volatility, increased the value to 82 points, for comparison, during the 2008 crisis, this index did not exceed 80 points, and in recent years it has been held at the level of 15-25 with peaks up to 45. Against the background of total panic among investors, on March 30, Brent crude updated the minimum of November 2002, falling to the level of $22.6 per barrel. The S&P, Dow Jones and Nikkei indexes are critically losing their positions. Experts note that the downward trend began even before the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the spread of the disease played a crucial role in the crisis increase.
by StealthEX
At the same time, digital assets also found themselves in a zone of turbulence: in the middle of the month, the price of bitcoin fell to $3800, followed by the price of altcoins. Panic sale leads to a chain reaction, many investors are getting rid of the cryptocurrency which is considered a risky investment, and the price of coins continues to decline.
The cryptocurrency market highly depends on what is happening in the world, so it will strengthen and continue to grow only when the situation with the pandemic becomes clear and less unpredictable. Therefore, the main task at this stage is to maintain composure and don’t give in to emotions when making decisions.
Despite the extremely uncertain situation, most analysts now give fairly favorable forecasts. Judging by the latest fluctuations in the exchange rate, the cryptocurrency market has come out of an uncontrolled fall. In their opinion, we expect a long flat with a slow trend of price growth against the background of halving. Despite bearish trends and skidding at $6,500, at the close of the quarter, bitcoin was able to hold above the important support level of $6,400. Michaël van de Poppe, a cryptanalyst of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, believes that now bitcoin is in the stage of consolidation and will gradually pay off in the next 4-6 years. Tuur Demeester, analyst and founder of Adamant Capital, suggests that holding the $6,300 level could be a key resistance level before the bull market can resume.
Similar dynamics are predicted for altcoins, which maintain a high correlation with the first cryptocurrency.
Here’s what the quarterly charts for BTC, ETH and XRP look like:

Bitcoin chart for 3 months. Source: CoinGecko

Ethereum chart for 3 months. Source: CoinGecko

XRP chart for 3 months. Source: CoinGecko
Also, experts in cryptocurrency research believe that the current situation in the oil and stock markets can have a positive impact on digital currencies. WTI oil, like Brent, fell to the level of 2002, trading around $20 mark. Black gold continues to look very vulnerable as well as the prospects for the oil market in general.
At the end of the first quarter of 2020, the bitcoin exchange rate decreased by 13%, but in comparison with traditional stock markets, the first cryptocurrency showed more successful results. The S&P 500 index, which includes shares of the 500 largest companies by capitalization, fell 19% to 2,584 points. This is the worst figure since 1938. President Trump’s proposal to allocate $2.2 trillion to support the American economy is criticized by many economists as leading to more problems than offering a real solution. They consider hyperinflation as the most likely scenario for the next year.
Since cryptocurrencies are not subject to inflation and are not in control of governments and banks, many predict that digital assets will be popular as a tool for hedging risks.
Earlier co-founder and CEO of Gemini exchange Tyler Winklevoss stated in his twitter:
https://preview.redd.it/xc61jsazlls41.png?width=768&format=png&auto=webp&s=06084bd6d511f93da4c485cd7eb3281566f2c4cc
The founder, head and CEO of the Galaxy Digital, Michael Novogratz, also believes that cryptocurrencies with mathematically limited emission could be a safe haven in the face of inflation.

Peter Brandt called the current crisis a “perfect storm” and noted that it could be a crucial period for Bitcoin. It is at this point that the coin can reveal itself as a protective asset and grow in price. In his tweet of March 23, he also advises treating cryptocurrencies as insurance policies rather than investments.
Trading volume on 22 popular crypto exchanges increased by 61% in the first quarter compared to the previous one — to $154 billion.
In March, major cryptocurrency exchanges recorded a sharp increase in the number of new users. Pierre Richard strategist of the Kraken exchange believes that people who are concerned about the futile efforts of the authorities to contain the crisis against the background of the pandemic feel the need to leave the centralized financial system.
With other positive aspects, we should not forget that cryptocurrencies remain extremely susceptible to manipulation by major players. That collapse, which we experienced in the middle of the month, allowed corporations to buy coins at an extremely low price and, in fact, nothing can prevent them from attacking the market in the future.
Whatever happens on the market, you can always exchange coins at StealthEX as we always have unlimited exchanges without requesting personal data. A large number of currencies available for exchange will allow you to create your investment portfolio in the most suitable way for you.

Coinviva Market Weekly Report - Week of 05/04/2020

Coinviva Market Weekly Report - Week of 05/04/2020

BTC/USD Hourly Chart
The Bitcoin price was able to break out of the upper Keltner channel at $6,540 and reached as high as $7,285 at one point. It went back to $6,818 which is near the resistance level from last December. The higher highs and higher lows show that the price is back on an upward trend.
The BTC price is expected to test the $7,140 resistance next week. If the momentum keeps up, the price can potentially go back to $7,650 in the medium term. For the time-being, wait for the price to break above the Keltner channel again near $7,000 and then enter a long position, with support at around $6,650.
Review of the week:
Despite the economic downturn induced by the coronavirus pandemic, Kraken CEO Jesse Powell predicts that Bitcoin (BTC) and the crypto industry as a whole will perform well in the months ahead. In an interview with Forbes, Powell reveals that while many companies are laying off workers, the San Francisco-based exchange is increasing its staff by nearly 10% due to an uptick in interest in the cryptocurrency market at large ever since the coronavirus surfaced in China. He says that both the cryptocurrency and traditional markets have their share of retail investors who make trades on a whim, and that Bitcoin has remained relatively stable, with the price rebounding by 30% plus last week.
A closely-watched Bitcoin (BTC) whale Joe007, who earned $20 million in realized profits on Bitfinex between February and March, says he expects more pain ahead for the global economy and predicts waves of volatility as governments push to prop up traditional markets and combat a devastating loss of jobs: “It is going to be the biggest economic shock of our generation. It will unfold in waves and over time, giving false hopes and then crushing them. The focus of the crisis will be shifting through different areas. Attempts to alleviate and solve one crisis will lead to more mess.” He expects investors to continue shifting assets to US dollars – a dynamic that pummeled equities and the crypto markets in March.
In a letter to investors, CEO and co-founder of Quantum Economics, Mati Greenspan, says Bitcoin’s recent crash, along with traditional markets, is not surprising. He argues that concerns are overblown regarding whether the leading cryptocurrency still has a future after the volatile pullback: “There seems to be an existential question going around the crypto market at the moment where people are saying that if bitcoin can’t rise in this environment then it probably doesn’t have much of a reason to exist at all. After all, the narrative of using bitcoin as a safe haven in times of financial stress has been a rather strong one throughout the years and so now should really be BTC’s time to shine. Bitcoin was invented to give us an alternative to money that is controlled by governments and banks. The volatility is largely due to the fact that it’s quite new and adoption rates are unstable, which leads to large levels of speculation. So, a measure of success would be to see bitcoin remain on a slow but steady incline, rather than zooming towards the moon due to global uncertainty.”

This next NANO bull run is going to leave many people heartbroken

Let me tell you people something. I've seen many of you depressed and sad during these past year and a half of slow and steady fall of many of the altcoins, including NANO. At the time of me writing this post, NANO is trading at 0.95$.
I'm going to tell you something that might wake you all up, and that is that this upcoming bull won't be easy. There will be many temptations for you people to flip your NANO once it starts to pump. The resistances are fairly simple to see 2$, 5$, 10$, 20$, 40$ and so on.
Many people will try to flip their NANO. Some will probably be successful: "Hey look, I just made easy 20% increase of my NANO stash, I do this all the time". But then, the price will not go down once they short and then they will find themselves coming back in NANO and have less NANO then they started with had they just held it through since the beginning.
They will exit at 2$, but will start buying back in once we go past 5$, some will sell here at 5$ but will start buying back once we break 10$. This will continue until 20$, and finally until 40$ when we break the ATH in terms of $, then, with no resistance in sight, the journey will continue to 100$. During this entire rise, exchanges like Kraken, Bittrex, Poloniex etc. will stop ignoring the listing of NANO as they will realize that they are missing big portion of money they could be making of its fees, which will just cause it to grow more and more.
This will sound ridiculous to some, but 100+$ per NANO is probably going to happen in the next 3 years or even sooner. Fundamentally there is no reason it doesn't happen and charts also confirm this. After 100$, who knows what can happen, another parabolic might take place again once adoption and marketing starts to be better and better and people start recognizing the quality off the coins. After we break 100$ only the sky is the limit.
Here is the chart I made that can illustrate how this growth might look in the short term future: https://charts.cointrader.pro/snapshot/TEqo3
This chart might be low-balling the growth considering how hard NANO could jump once people realize the fundamentals behind it. Let's do some math here also so that this chart and my story doesn't sound like it's based on nothing.
Current NANO market cap is 13.110 BTC , which is currently 134.577.264 $. Making NANO go 30x will still put it below price of Litecoin (LTC) during a BEAR market! Litecoin can't even be compared to NANO, not even fundamentally nor development wise. Making NANO go 100x will only place it slightly ahead of XRP also in a BEAR market, which also can't be compared to NANO. 100x jump probably won't be enough to pass LTC during bull market so this scenario is most definitely a possibility.
I'm going to repeat this again. This ride won't be easy people, but it sure as hell will be worth it for anyone who decides to hold through the ups and downs. I'm not saying you are stupid if you sell at profit and exit. Be my guest, take out your investment and leave the moonbag to go. But if you could've invested in BTC back in 2011, would you exit for a 2x-3x profit when deep inside you know it has high probability of going 100x+ and a potential of going 1000+x? Recognize the value of coin that you are holding.
I'm sure many of you have been asking yourself: "How is it possible that this coins has such a low market cap? It has instant transactions, ZERO fees and continuous development. This could be a total game changer, am I missing something?" No, you're not. Other whales that are accumulating are only making you think that you're missing something. This is how it feels like when you buy the bottom of the price. This is how it feels like when you KNOW something is undervalued, but it just stays there. This is EXACTLY how the true holders of the Bitcoin felt in December 2011 when Bitcoin crashed from 31$ to 2$.
I'm going to end this long rant with a famous quote:
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. - Mahatma Gandhi
TLDR;
Many will sell and exit for short term gain of 20%-100% and will miss out in the next bull run. NANO will reach 100+$. https://charts.cointrader.pro/snapshot/TEqo3

Reasons why NANO is so low right now

I know most of the people here won't get it, but this is the only reason why NANO is so low right now.
  1. Marketing of NANO is terrible. Many people have no clue what NANO does or if it even exist. A significant volume drop indicates this aswell.
  2. Binance banned people in US from trading on it's main page. Since most of the volume on Binance came from US, I can imagine this was also the reason of significant volume drop on NANO.
  3. Reliable fiat gateway with low fees. No need to comment on this one.
  4. Some people who do find out about NANO think it's too good to be true and don't want to buy as: "There must be something wrong with the coin if it's that good and it's not top 10". This can be also put into a marketing issue.
  5. Bitgrail spectacle. This scares new investors and old/new whales of being dumped on. They would much rather have this Bitgrail stash shaken out now than to have NANO reach 50$ and suddenly get dumped on by Bitgrail stash.
Here's the truth: Reasons 1.-4. are very easily fixable. The only solution is aggressive marketing and things will start to fall on its place. Once NANO's team makes aggressive marketing moves and NANO get's added to Bittrex, Kraken, Poloniex, Binance US etc. people will be more aware of this coin. (Reasons 1-2. fixed) This will cause it's volume and price to rise.
Once this happens, NANO will become partners with fiat gateway with low fees which will cause more adoption. Once this happens price and volume will rise even more. (Reason 3. fixed).
After this, people that I mentioned in Reason 4. will start to FOMO in the coin because they "can't believe how stupid they were that they didn't buy the coin while it was dogshit cheap".
Here's another truth: Reason 5. will hunt NANO for many years just like Mt. Gox did with Bitcoin. It still won't stop NANO from growing, because it's fundamentally so much ahead of all cryptocurrencies.
People have no idea what is going on on the market right now. They are so depressed and can't imagine another alt season happening. It will happen and the coins with best fundamentals will skyrocket. A lot of you will miss out. That's the nature of the game.
What do I expect from NANO right now? Short term, I think we will probably fall to 0.7 USD or somewhere near that price. People are so bearish that I think this will be the final shakeout. I'm still buying at these levels, because this coin has a potential of reaching 100+$ USD if things go the right way and if NANO markets itself well enough. This is the chart that I agree with: https://charts.cointrader.pro/snapshot/TEqo3 .
Getting people familiar with NANO and having aggressive marketing from NANO team and our community will positively reflect on the price in the long run.
Hold on tight. The end is near. Come back to this post in 1 year and see the magic that happened. I'm not calling the exact bottom, but I'm 100% sure that NANO will have a higher price than this in the next 6 months.

  • Set the trading start conditions
This informs the bot when the first trade should be completed and there is a choice between TradingView Signal Buy or Strong Buy, TradingView Signal Strong Buy, Manual or Open New Trade ASAP.

My expiriences with crypto exchange Kraken.

So when learning about trading it is logical that first several years will yield more losses than profits. So far so that most traders suggest that your starting portfolio shouldn't be larger what you are willing to throw away.
So in September I joined Kraken, with ~100 EUR in LTC/BTC currency. And of course I lost 30 % in first week due to me getting accustomed with GUI , charts, SMA/EMAand etc while learning about analysis and losing in value to falling market.
Then drop of 8500-7500 happened in second week of September, and I accidentally shortened the BTC. Which was lucky but I contacted support team to explain to me what I have done. They were (generally are) polite and pointed me to the webinar that was supposed to be held on 6th November.
I closed the short position on 8th of October (classic FOMO) , got long and canceled that on October 10-11. So far I was up 5 EUR and down 3 (long was on higher leverage). So I shortened it again and waited. On 18th October I have just learned about stop-loss and take-profit and I placed it on 10 EUR above current price at the time.
Now you might hear ominous bells in the background as we approach the 25-th and 26-st October. So on that fated day, price busted trough my stop loss and locked me out of making any trade. I was in hell (figuratively) watching how I was loosing 20+ EUR not being able to do anything.
Once dust has settled and I have cut my losses (on 27-nth) , I decided to contact support team again to notify them that I was locked out of trading in order for them to fix any issues they might've been experiencing. They were nice and pleasant, and told me next time that happens to refresh my browser, clear my cookies, click sync bunch of times, log off and on, refresh tab on my browser, exit my browser and restart it again and restart my computer. And then kind people from support team (they were changing every 15 minutes, while I had to explain everything from the start) made me an technical support ticket and sent them to their trading support team[tsm].
There came 28th October, and I started new long position since I was under false influence that China or whatever will bounce bitcoin back to 10 K. I was mostly driven by replenishing the loses (at least 20 EUR one ) - NEVER TRADE ON EMOTION... this was my big mistake.
Then on 29th October, the lock down happened again. And after doing all steps they listed earlier - with no change whatsoever - I contacted the support team once again. They repeated the steps I have already done, and generated new ticket to trading support team. when I asked them what is the status of my previous ticket - they have told me that someone will get in touch with me soon.
My next mistake was trying to rustle with the market instead of waiting for response of tsm. I went down to 35 EUR till end of the October.
The webinar wasn't held, and response I got was to try "refresh my browser, clear my cookies, click sync bunch of times, log off and on, refresh tab on my browser, exit my browser and restart it again and restart my computer." and let them know if it doesn't start in half of an hour. It didn't, they apologized... no harm no foul. Soon after that (couple of days) John from tsm contacted me telling me I need to give him screen shot next time that happens, and on 3rd November it happened again. So I made screenshot and cropped the picture to show the issue and sent it to him. Keith replied next day that telling me that he needs it timestamped (although they have access to my ledger and every picture has binary date time block in their binary code ) , on which I told him that each picture is timestamped in binary. And if that happened again could I be refunded, and if I couldn't be refunded I would then write an review , forward all data to California state or ask for an refund.
Next two days no response. Then It happened again, I made screen shots of my phone (with date and time clearly visible) and asked him what is his response on refund part. And Maximus responed me with
I have gone to our dev's regarding your Rate Limitation Error. Every action taken on Kraken Pro (adding/closing/cancelling orders + retrieve balance (Sync)) is hitting the API. If too many actions are taken in a short period of time and you’ll receive this error and be temporarily locked out until you recover “points or allowance”.
I'm sorry for your frustration. Our Kraken Interface at kraken.com might be more suitable to your style of trading.
Then I asked again about refunds, and person who introduced himself as Kevin(later signed as Maximus) told me :
Kraken does not take the other side of your trade ans as such does not refund or reimburse for trades.
I copied whole ledger, and tried to withdraw my funds (with no luck ) and tried to trade in order to increase my funds so I can withdraw them and leave the hell hole that is their platform. And to no ones surprise I have lost 10 EUR till then. And interface on kraken.com that didn't help at all. Timed bid executed immediately on market price (instead of limit) with taker fees, stop losses executed randomly ... and etc.
Then I was locked out again, my short position order was filled, but my position held 0.00065 btc instead of 0.013 btc, I contacted the support yet again , where after Andrew replaced Maxima an phantom order (which I didn't fill) canceling the difference of 0.01235 btc appeared before my eyes. Andrew tried to submit new ticket to technical suport team, and when I asked him for their names... Andrew refused to tell me, mentioning that I have been in contact with them (Maximus, John, Kevin, Keith .... and of course Kevin Maximus). On which I finally saw where this was going, persuaded Andrew to withdraw my funds and left the fucking website.
If you are using Kraken, don't. I was extremely stupid hanging on trough all that stuff. Leave it and go to another. Americans especially, after some data analysis the API calls jump 2 hours before American time zones, and diminish 10 hours later.

If an influx of some $100 million moves the price of one Bitcoin with a $1000.........

I saw this on Zero Hedge:
Oliver von Landsberg-Sadie, chief executive of London-based cryptocurrency firm BCB Group, said the move was likely triggered by an algorithmic order worth about $100 million spread across major exchanges - U.S.-based Coinbase and Kraken, and Luxembourg-based Bitstamp.
"There has been a single order that has been algorithmically-managed across these three venues, of around 20,000 BTC,” he said. “If you look at the volumes on each of those three exchanges – there were in-concert, synchronized, units of volume of around 7,000 BTC in an hour”.
So there was an influx of some $100 million that caused Bitcoin to rise $1000 a coin. Yes I guess it triggered some shorts to be covered etc..
But an influx of $100 million is just a small amount when looking at some budgets. Russia is roughly buying a million ounces of gold each month, that's more than one billion $. What if Russia decided to invest half of that money next month into Bitcoin...
If it would only have the same effect of that $100 million influx Bitcoin would rise $5000 a coin. What if Russia would do that the coming 12 months? What if China decided to join after some months, what if they would double that amount.
You can bet other countries wouldn't be just watching and see where the price would go to. Nor would the average investor and others. It will simply be a waterfall of countries, investors, companies and normal people who will blindly jump in and the absurd price movements would make December 2017 look like a minor spike on the charts.
Wishful thinking, absurd, dreaming you say? Well guess what I was told halfway 2017 when I said I expected Bitcoin to be worth more than $10k within 5 years time. How could I know it would be double that prediction in only 6 months...
It's simple math, if governments, pension funds, investors, etc will just be toe tipping into Bitcoin, the price movements will be so big that December 2017 will look like a warmup party.
There will be so many spikes like today, and bigger, for such a long time it will be on every news outlet, in each newspaper, be talked about at every coffee machine, and here at reddit we will see people go crazy like never before.
At this moment it's still a gamble if this will work out let alone when, so invest only what you are willing to loose. But once it gains momentum don't think you will have much time left to start learning about it, setup an account, start accumulating.
I simply don't see any other escape from the devastating fiat ponzy we are in right now. It will be both the realization of the worthlessness of fiat combined with the insight that Bitcoin is different that will cause an unstoppable wealth transfer.
When will you start to see it, start to believe in it, start to transfer your wealth into Bitcoin? At 10k, at 100k? Why don't you think out a plan, make up your mind about what would convince you Bitcoin isn't some scam? At what price level would you think it is safe to gamble/invest 1% of your wealth into it, when to invest 10% of your wealth in it? Would you be ready if the first pension fund announced it invested in it, or if a small country would admit it put some of it's reserves into it? Just think about it, make a plan, be ahead of the herds.
The next ath will probably take the price to a level where an average family will have a very hard time to just get 1 Bitcoin, but could easily take it to levels it will just become impossible. Even if after that ath it would drop again with 70-80% it will very likely be way above the current price. And if you would go and explore above samples and realize how much money will be involved it's hard to imagine it will ever again reach current levels once those gates are opened. Compare it to what it would take to invest $5k right now.
I try to explain I think it's a bigger risk to have no exposure at all than to miss out if Bitcoin would succeed.
Don't go crazy with your exposure, but investing some money you can miss, to me that is more sound than dismissing Bitcoin all together. Don't just believe what i say, learn what Bitcoin is how it works, make sure you understand where you put your hard earned money into.
But start learning today, you won't be able to go back in time.

Your Guide to Monero, and Why It Has Great Potential

/////Your Guide to Monero, and Why It Has Great Potential/////

Marketing.
It's a dirty word for most members of the Monero community.
It is also one of the most divisive words in the Monero community. Yet, the lack of marketing is one of the most frustrating things for many newcomers.
This is what makes this an unusual post from a member of the Monero community.
This post is an unabashed and unsolicited analyzation of why I believe Monero to have great potential.
Below I have attempted to outline different reasons why Monero has great potential, beginning with upcoming developments and use cases, to broader economic motives, speculation, and key issues for it to overcome.
I encourage you to discuss and criticise my musings, commenting below if you feel necessary to do so.

///Upcoming Developments///

Bulletproofs - A Reduction in Transaction Sizes and Fees
Since the introduction of Ring Confidential Transactions (Ring CT), transaction amounts have been hidden in Monero, albeit at the cost of increased transaction fees and sizes. In order to mitigate this issue, Bulletproofs will soon be added to reduce both fees and transaction size by 80% to 90%. This is great news for those transacting smaller USD amounts as people commonly complained Monero's fees were too high! Not any longer though! More information can be found here. Bulletproofs are already working on the Monero testnet, and developers were aiming to introduce them in March 2018, however it could be delayed in order to ensure everything is tried and tested.
Multisig
Multisig has recently been merged! Mulitsig, also called multisignature, is the requirement for a transaction to have two or more signatures before it can be executed. Multisig transactions and addresses are indistinguishable from normal transactions and addresses in Monero, and provide more security than single-signature transactions. It is believed this will lead to additional marketplaces and exchanges to supporting Monero.
Kovri
Kovri is an implementation of the Invisible Internet Project (I2P) network. Kovri uses both garlic encryption and garlic routing to create a private, protected overlay-network across the internet. This overlay-network provides users with the ability to effectively hide their geographical location and internet IP address. The good news is Kovri is under heavy development and will be available soon. Unlike other coins' false privacy claims, Kovri is a game changer as it will further elevate Monero as the king of privacy.
Mobile Wallets
There is already a working Android Wallet called Monerujo available in the Google Play Store. X Wallet is an IOS mobile wallet. One of the X Wallet developers recently announced they are very, very close to being listed in the Apple App Store, however are having some issues with getting it approved. The official Monero IOS and Android wallets, along with the MyMonero IOS and Android wallets, are also almost ready to be released, and can be expected very soon.
Hardware Wallets
Hardware wallets are currently being developed and nearing completion. Because Monero is based on the CryptoNote protocol, it means it requires unique development in order to allow hardware wallet integration. The Ledger Nano S will be adding Monero support by the end of Q1 2018. There is a recent update here too. Even better, for the first time ever in cryptocurrency history, the Monero community banded together to fund the development of an exclusive Monero Hardware Wallet, and will be available in Q2 2018, costing only about $20! In addition, the CEO of Trezor has offered a 10BTC bounty to whoever can provide the software to allow Monero integration. Someone can be seen to already be working on that here.
TAILS Operating System Integration
Monero is in the progress of being packaged in order for it to be integrated into TAILS and ready to use upon install. TAILS is the operating system popularised by Edward Snowden and is commonly used by those requiring privacy such as journalists wanting to protect themselves and sources, human-right defenders organizing in repressive contexts, citizens facing national emergencies, domestic violence survivors escaping from their abusers, and consequently, darknet market users.
In the meantime, for those users who wish to use TAILS with Monero, u/Electric_sheep01 has provided Sheep's Noob guide to Monero GUI in Tails 3.2, which is a step-by-step guide with screenshots explaining how to setup Monero in TAILS, and is very easy to follow.
Mandatory Hardforks
Unlike other coins, Monero receives a protocol upgrade every 6 months in March and September. Think of it as a Consensus Protocol Update. Monero's hard forks ensure quality development takes place, while preventing political or ideological issues from hindering progress. When a hardfork occurs, you simply download and use the new daemon version, and your existing wallet files and copy of the blockchain remain compatible. This reddit post provides more information.
Dynamic fees
Many cryptocurrencies have an arbitrary block size limit. Although Monero has a limit, it is adaptive based on the past 100 blocks. Similarly, fees change based on transaction volume. As more transactions are processed on the Monero network, the block size limit slowly increases and the fees slowly decrease. The opposite effect also holds true. This means that the more transactions that take place, the cheaper the fees!
Tail Emission and Inflation
There will be around 18.4 million Monero mined at the end of May 2022. However, tail emission will kick in after that which is 0.6 XMR, so it has no fixed limit. Gundamlancer explains that Monero's "main emission curve will issue about 18.4 million coins to be mined in approximately 8 years. (more precisely 18.132 Million coins by ca. end of May 2022) After that, a constant "tail emission" of 0.6 XMR per 2-minutes block (modified from initially equivalent 0.3 XMR per 1-minute block) will create a sub-1% perpetual inflatio starting with 0.87% yearly inflation around May 2022) to prevent the lack of incentives for miners once a currency is not mineable anymore.
Monero Research Lab
Monero has a group of anonymous/pseudo-anonymous university academics actively researching, developing, and publishing academic papers in order to improve Monero. See here and here. The Monero Research Lab are acquainted with other members of cryptocurrency academic community to ensure when new research or technology is uncovered, it can be reviewed and decided upon whether it would be beneficial to Monero. This ensures Monero will always remain a leading cryptocurrency. A recent end of 2017 update from a MRL researcher can be found here.

///Monero's Technology - Rising Above The Rest///

Monero Has Already Proven Itself To Be Private, Secure, Untraceable, and Trustless
Monero is the only private, untraceable, trustless, secure and fungible cryptocurrency. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are TRACEABLE through the use of blockchain analytics, and has lead to the prosecution of numerous individuals, such as the alleged Alphabay administrator Alexandre Cazes. In the Forfeiture Complaint which detailed the asset seizure of Alexandre Cazes, the anonymity capabilities of Monero were self-demonstrated by the following statement of the officials after the AlphaBay shutdown: "In total, from CAZES' wallets and computer agents took control of approximately $8,800,000 in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero and Zcash, broken down as follows: 1,605.0503851 Bitcoin, 8,309.271639 Ethereum, 3,691.98 Zcash, and an unknown amount of Monero".
Privacy CANNOT BE OPTIONAL and must be at a PROTOCOL LEVEL. With Monero, privacy is mandatory, so that everyone gets the benefits of privacy without any transactions standing out as suspicious. This is the reason Darknet Market places are moving to Monero, and will never use Verge, Zcash, Dash, Pivx, Sumo, Spectre, Hush or any other coins that lack good privacy. Peter Todd (who was involved in the Zcash trusted setup ceremony) recently reiterated his concerns of optional privacy after Jeffrey Quesnelle published his recent paper stating 31.5% of Zcash transactions may be traceable, and that only ~1% of the transactions are pure privacy transactions (i.e., z -> z transactions). When the attempted private transactions stand out like a sore thumb there is no privacy, hence why privacy cannot be optional. In addition, in order for a cryptocurrency to truly be private, it must not be controlled by a centralised body, such as a company or organisation, because it opens it up to government control and restrictions. This is no joke, but Zcash is supported by DARPA and the Israeli government!.
Monero provides a stark contrast compared to other supposed privacy coins, in that Monero does not have a rich list! With all other coins, you can view wallet balances on the blockexplorers. You can view Monero's non-existent rich list here to see for yourself.
I will reiterate here that Monero is TRUSTLESS. You don't need to rely on anyone else to protect your privacy, or worry about others colluding to learn more about you. No one can censor your transaction or decide to intervene. Monero is immutable, unlike Zcash, in which the lead developer Zooko publicly tweeted the possibility of providing a backdoor for authorities to trace transactions. To Zcash's demise, Zooko famously tweeted:
" And by the way, I think we can successfully make Zcash too traceable for criminals like WannaCry, but still completely private & fungible. …"
Ethereum's track record of immutability is also poor. Ethereum was supposed to be an immutable blockchain ledger, however after the DAO hack this proved to not be the case. A 2016 article on Saintly Law summarised the problematic nature of Ethereum's leadership and blockchain intervention:
" Many ethereum and blockchain advocates believe that the intervention was the wrong move to make in this situation. Smart contracts are meant to be self-executing, immutable and free from disturbance by organisations and intermediaries. Yet the building block of all smart contracts, the code, is inherently imperfect. This means that the technology is vulnerable to the same malicious hackers that are targeting businesses and governments. It is also clear that the large scale intervention after the DAO hack could not and would not likely be taken in smaller transactions, as they greatly undermine the viability of the cryptocurrency and the technology."
Monero provides Fungibility and Privacy in a Cashless World
As outlined on GetMonero.org, fungibility is the property of a currency whereby two units can be substituted in place of one another. Fungibility means that two units of a currency can be mutually substituted and the substituted currency is equal to another unit of the same size. For example, two $10 bills can be exchanged and they are functionally identical to any other $10 bill in circulation (although $10 bills have unique ID numbers and are therefore not completely fungible). Gold is probably a closer example of true fungibility, where any 1 oz. of gold of the same grade is worth the same as another 1 oz. of gold. Monero is fungible due to the nature of the currency which provides no way to link transactions together nor trace the history of any particular XMR. 1 XMR is functionally identical to any other 1 XMR. Fungibility is an advantage Monero has over Bitcoin and almost every other cryptocurrency, due to the privacy inherent in the Monero blockchain and the permanently traceable nature of the Bitcoin blockchain. With Bitcoin, any BTC can be tracked by anyone back to its creation coinbase transaction. Therefore, if a coin has been used for an illegal purpose in the past, this history will be contained in the blockchain in perpetuity.
A great example of Bitcoin's lack of fungibility was reposted by u/ViolentlyPeaceful:
"Imagine you sell cupcakes and receive Bitcoin as payment. It turns out that someone who owned that Bitcoin before you was involved in criminal activity. Now you are worried that you have become a suspect in a criminal case, because the movement of funds to you is a matter of public record. You are also worried that certain Bitcoins that you thought you owned will be considered ‘tainted’ and that others will refuse to accept them as payment."
This lack of fungibility means that certain businesses will be obligated to avoid accepting BTC that have been previously used for purposes which are illegal, or simply run afoul of their Terms of Service. Currently some large Bitcoin companies are blocking, suspending, or closing accounts that have received Bitcoin used in online gambling or other purposes deemed unsavory by said companies. Monero has been built specifically to address the problem of traceability and non-fungibility inherent in other cryptocurrencies. By having completely private transactions Monero is truly fungible and there can be no blacklisting of certain XMR, while at the same time providing all the benefits of a secure, decentralized, permanent blockchain.
The world is moving cashless. Fact. The ramifications of this are enormous as we move into a cashless world in which transactions will be tracked and there is a potential for data to be used by third parties for adverse purposes. While most new cryptocurrency investors speculate upon vaporware ICO tokens in the hope of generating wealth, Monero provides salvation for those in which financial privacy is paramount. Too often people equate Monero's features with criminal endeavors. Privacy is not a crime, and is necessary for good money. Transparency in Monero is possible OFF-CHAIN, which offers greater transparency and flexibility. For example, a Monero user may share their Private View Key with their accountant for tax purposes.
Monero aims to be adopted by more than just those with nefarious use cases. For example, if you lived in an oppressive religious regime and wanted to buy a certain item, using Monero would allow you to exchange value privately and across borders if needed. Another example is that if everybody can see how much cryptocurrency you have in your wallet, then a certain service might decide to charge you more, and bad actors could even use knowledge of your wallet balance to target you for extortion purposes. For example, a Russian cryptocurrency blogger was recently beaten and robbed of $425k. This is why FUNGIBILITY IS ESSENTIAL. To summarise this in a nutshell:
"A lack of fungibility means that when sending or receiving funds, if the other person personally knows you during a transaction, or can get any sort of information on you, or if you provide a residential address for shipping etc. – you could quite potentially have them use this against you for personal gain"
For those that wish to seek more information about why Monero is a superior form of money, read The Merits of Monero: Why Monero Vs Bitcoin over on the Monero.how website.
Monero's Humble Origins
Something that still rings true today despite the great influx of money into cryptocurrencies was outlined in Nick Tomaino's early 2016 opinion piece. The author claimed that "one of the most interesting aspects of Monero is that the project has gained traction without a crowd sale pre-launch, without VC funding and any company or well-known investors and without a pre-mine. Like Bitcoin in the early days, Monero has been a purely grassroots movement that was bootstrapped by the creator and adopted organically without any institutional buy-in. The creator and most of the core developers serve the community pseudonymously and the project was launched on a message board (similar to the way Bitcoin was launched on an email newsletter)."
The Organic Growth of the Monero Community
The Monero community over at monero is exponentially growing. You can view the Monero reddit metrics here and see that the Monero subreddit currently gains more than 10,000 (yes, ten thousand!) new subscribers every 10 days! Compare this to most of the other coins out there, and it proves to be one of the only projects with real organic growth. In addition to this, the community subreddits are specifically divided to ensure the main subreddit remains unbiased, tech focused, with no shilling or hype. All trading talk is designated to xmrtrader, and all memes at moonero.
Forum Funding System
While most contributors have gratefully volunteered their time to the project, Monero also has a Forum Funding System in which money is donated by community members to ensure it attracts and retains the brightest minds and most skilled developers. Unlike ICOs and other cryptocurrencies, Monero never had a premine, and does not have a developer tax. If ANYONE requires funding for a Monero related project, then they can simply request funding from the community, and if the community sees it as beneficial, they will donate. Types of projects range from Monero funding for local meet ups, to paying developers for their work.
Monero For Goods, Services, and Market Places
There is a growing number of online goods and services that you can now pay for with Monero. Globee is a service that allows online merchants to accept payments through credit cards and a host of cryptocurrencies, while being settled in Bitcoin, Monero or fiat currency. Merchants can reach a wider variety of customers, while not needing to invest in additional hardware to run cryptocurrency wallets or accept the current instability of the cryptocurrency market. Globee uses all of the open source API's that BitPay does making integrations much easier!
Project Coral Reef is a service which allows you to shop and pay for popular music band products and services using Monero.
Linux, Veracrypt, and a whole array of VPNs now accept Monero.
There is a new Monero only marketplace called Annularis currently being developed which has been created for those who value financial privacy and economic freedom, and there are rumours Open Bazaar is likely to support Monero once Multisig is implemented.
In addition, Monero is also supported by The Living Room of Satoshi so you can pay bills or credit cards directly using Monero.
Monero can be found on a growing number of cryptocurrency exchange services such as Bittrex, Poloniex, Cryptopia, Shapeshift, Changelly, Bitfinex, Kraken, Bisq, Tux, and many others.
For those wishing to purchase Monero anonymously, there are services such as LocalMonero.co and Moneroforcash.com.
With XMR.TO you can pay Bitcoin addresses directly with Monero. There are no other fees than the miner ones. All user records are purged after 48 hours. XMR.TO has also been added as an embedded feature into the Monerujo android wallet.
Coinhive Browser-Based Mining
Unlike Bitcoin, Monero can be mined using CPUs and GPUs. Not only does this encourage decentralisation, it also opens the door to browser based mining. Enter side of stage, Coinhive browser-based mining. As described by Hon Lau on the Symnatec Blog Browser-based mining, as its name suggests, is a method of cryptocurrency mining that happens inside a browser and is implemented using Javascript. Coinhive is marketed as an alternative to browser ad revenue. The motivation behind this is simple: users pay for the content indirectly by coin mining when they visit the site and website owners don't have to bother users with sites laden with ads, trackers, and all the associated paraphern. This is great, provided that the websites are transparent with site visitors and notify users of the mining that will be taking place, or better still, offer users a way to opt in, although this hasn't always been the case thus far.
Skepticism Sunday
The main Monero subreddit has weekly Skepticism Sundays which was created with the purpose of installing "a culture of being scientific, skeptical, and rational". This is used to have open, critical discussions about monero as a technology, it's economics, and so on.

Major Investors And Crypto Figureheads Are Interested
Ari Paul is the co-founder and CIO of BlockTower Capital. He was previously a portfolio manager for the University of Chicago's $8 billion endowment, and a derivatives market maker and proprietary trader for Susquehanna International Group. Paul was interviewed on CNBC on the 26th of December and when asked what was his favourite coin was, he stated "One that has real fundamental value besides from Bitcoin is Monero" and said it has "very strong engineering". In addition, when he was asked if that was the one used by criminals, he replied "Everything is used by criminals including the US dollar and the Euro". Paul later supported these claims on Twitter, recommending only Bitcoin and Monero as long-term investments.
There are reports that "Roger Ver, earlier known as 'Bitcoin Jesus' for his evangelical support of the Bitcoin during its early years, said his investment in Monero is 'substantial' and his biggest in any virtual currency since Bitcoin.
Charlie Lee, the creator of Litecoin, has publicly stated his appreciation of Monero. In a September 2017 tweet directed to Edward Snowden explaining why Monero is superior to Zcash, Charlie Lee tweeted:
All private transactions, More tested privacy tech, No tax on miners to pay investors, No high inflation... better investment.
John McAfee, arguably cryptocurrency's most controversial character at the moment, has publicly supported Monero numerous times over the last twelve months(before he started shilling ICOs), and has even claimed it will overtake Bitcoin.
Playboy instagram celebrity Dan Bilzerian is a Monero investor, with 15% of his portfolio made up of Monero.
Finally, while he may not be considered a major investor or figurehead, Erik Finman, a young early Bitcoin investor and multimillionaire, recently appeared in a CNBC Crypto video interview, explaining why he isn't entirely sold on Bitcoin anymore, and expresses his interest in Monero, stating:
"Monero is a really good one. Monero is an incredible currency, it's completely private."
There is a common belief that most of the money in cryptocurrency is still chasing the quick pump and dumps, however as the market matures, more money will flow into legitimate projects such as Monero. Monero's organic growth in price is evidence smart money is aware of Monero and gradually filtering in.
The Bitcoin Flaw
A relatively unknown blogger named CryptoIzzy posted three poignant pieces regarding Monero and its place in the world. The Bitcoin Flaw: Monero Rising provides an intellectual comparison of Monero to other cryptocurrencies, and Valuing Cryptocurrencies: An Approach outlines methods of valuing different coins.
CryptoIzzy's most recent blog published only yesterday titled Monero Valuation - Update and Refocus is a highly recommended read. It touches on why Monero is much more than just a coin for the Darknet Markets, and provides a calculated future price of Monero.
CryptoIzzy also published The Power of Money: A Case for Bitcoin, which is an exploration of our monetary system, and the impact decentralised cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Monero will have on the world. In the epilogue the author also provides a positive and detailed future valuation based on empirical evidence. CryptoIzzy predicts Monero to easily progress well into the four figure range.
Monero Has a Relatively Small Marketcap
Recently we have witnessed many newcomers to cryptocurrency neglecting to take into account coins' marketcap and circulating supply, blindly throwing money at coins under $5 with inflated marketcaps and large circulating supplies, and then believing it's possible for them to reach $100 because someone posted about it on Facebook or Reddit.
Compared to other cryptocurrencies, Monero still has a low marketcap, which means there is great potential for the price to multiply. At the time of writing, according to CoinMarketCap, Monero's marketcap is only a little over $5 billion, with a circulating supply of 15.6 million Monero, at a price of $322 per coin.
For this reason, I would argue that this is evidence Monero is grossly undervalued. Just a few billion dollars of new money invested in Monero can cause significant price increases. Monero's marketcap only needs to increase to ~$16 billion and the price will triple to over $1000. If Monero's marketcap simply reached ~$35 billion (just over half of Ripple's $55 billion marketcap), Monero's price will increase 600% to over $2000 per coin.
Another way of looking at this is Monero's marketcap only requires ~$30 billion of new investor money to see the price per Monero reach $2000, while for Ethereum to reach $2000, Ethereum's marketcap requires a whopping ~$100 billion of new investor money.
Technical Analysis
There are numerous Monero technical analysts, however none more eerily on point than the crowd-pleasing Ero23. Ero23's charts and analysis can be found on Trading View. Ero23 gained notoriety for his long-term Bitcoin bull chart published in February, which is still in play today. Head over to his Trading View page to see his chart: Monero's dwindling supply. $10k in 2019 scenario, in which Ero23 predicts Monero to reach $10,000 in 2019. There is also this chart which appears to be freakishly accurate and is tracking along perfectly today.
Coinbase Rumours
Over the past 12 months there have been ongoing rumours that Monero will be one of the next cryptocurrencies to be added to Coinbase. In January 2017, Monero Core team member Riccardo 'Fluffypony' Spagni presented a talk at Coinbase HQ. In addition, in November 2017 GDAX announced the GDAX Digit Asset Framework outlining specific parameters cryptocurrencies must meet in order to be added to the exchange. There is speculation that when Monero has numerous mobile and hardware wallets available, and multisig is working, then it will be added. This would enable public accessibility to Monero to increase dramatically as Coinbase had in excess of 13 million users as of December, and is only going to grow as demand for cryptocurrencies increases. Many users argue that due to KYC/AML regulations, Coinbase will never be able to add Monero, however the Kraken exchange already operates in the US and has XMfiat pairs, so this is unlikely to be the reason Coinbase is yet to implement XMfiat trading.
Monero Is Not an ICO Scam
It is likely most of the ICOs which newcomers invest in, hoping to get rich quick, won't even be in the Top 100 cryptocurrencies next year. A large portion are most likely to be pumps and dumps, and we have already seen numerous instances of ICO exit scams. Once an ICO raises millions of dollars, the developers or CEO of the company have little incentive to bother rolling out their product or service when they can just cash out and leave. The majority of people who create a company to provide a service or product, do so in order to generate wealth. Unless these developers and CEOs are committed and believed in their product or service, it's likely that the funds raised during the ICO will far exceed any revenue generated from real world use cases.
Monero is a Working Currency, Today
Monero is a working currency, here today.
The majority of so called cryptocurrencies that exist today are not true currencies, and do not aim to be. They are a token of exchange. They are like a share in a start-up company hoping to use blockchain technology to succeed in business. A crypto-assest is a more accurate name for coins such as Ethereum, Neo, Cardano, Vechain, etc.
Monero isn't just a vaporware ICO token that promises to provide a blockchain service in the future. It is not a platform for apps. It is not a pump and dump coin.
Monero is the only coin with all the necessary properties to be called true money.
Monero is private internet money.
Some even describe Monero as an online Swiss Bank Account or Bitcoin 2.0, and it is here to continue on from Bitcoin's legacy.
Monero is alleviating the public from the grips of banks, and protests the monetary system forced upon us.
Monero only achieved this because it is the heart and soul, and blood, sweat, and tears of the contributors to this project. Monero supporters are passionate, and Monero has gotten to where it is today thanks to its contributors and users.

///Key Issues for Monero to Overcome///

Scalability
While Bulletproofs are soon to be implemented in order to improve Monero's transaction sizes and fees, scalability is an issue for Monero that is continuously being assessed by Monero's researchers and developers to find the most appropriate solution. Ricardo 'Fluffypony' Spagni recently appeared on CNBC's Crypto Trader, and when asked whether Monero is scalable as it stands today, Spagni stated that presently, Monero's on-chain scaling is horrible and transactions are larger than Bitcoin's (because of Monero's privacy features), so side-chain scaling may be more efficient. Spagni elaborated that the Monero team is, and will always be, looking for solutions to an array of different on-chain and off-chain scaling options, such as developing a Mimblewimble side-chain, exploring the possibility of Lightning Network so atomic swaps can be performed, and Tumblebit.
In a post on the Monero subreddit from roughly a month ago, monero moderator u/dEBRUYNE_1 supports Spagni's statements. dEBRUYNE_1 clarifies the issue of scalability:
"In Bitcoin, the main chain is constrained and fees are ludicrous. This results in users being pushed to second layer stuff (e.g. sidechains, lightning network). Users do not have optionality in Bitcoin. In Monero, the goal is to make the main-chain accessible to everyone by keeping fees reasonable. We want users to have optionality, i.e., let them choose whether they'd like to use the main chain or second layer stuff. We don't want to take that optionality away from them."
When the Spagni CNBC video was recently linked to the Monero subreddit, it was met with lengthy debate and discussion from both users and developers. u/ferretinjapan summarised the issue explaining:
"Monero has all the mechanisms it needs to find the balance between transaction load, and offsetting the costs of miner infrastructure/profits, while making sure the network is useful for users. But like the interviewer said, the question is directed at "right now", and Fluffys right to a certain extent, Monero's transactions are huge, and compromises in blockchain security will help facilitate less burdensome transactional activity in the future. But to compare Monero to Bitcoin's transaction sizes is somewhat silly as Bitcoin is nowhere near as useful as monero, and utility will facilitate infrastructure building that may eventually utterly dwarf Bitcoin. And to equate scaling based on a node being run on a desktop being the only option for what classifies as "scalable" is also an incredibly narrow interpretation of the network being able to scale, or not. Given the extremely narrow definition of scaling people love to (incorrectly) use, I consider that a pretty crap question to put to Fluffy in the first place, but... ¯_(ツ)_/¯"
u/xmrusher also contributed to the discussion, comparing Bitcoin to Monero using this analogous description:
"While John is much heavier than Henry, he's still able to run faster, because, unlike Henry, he didn't chop off his own legs just so the local wheelchair manufacturer can make money. While Morono has much larger transactions then Bitcoin, it still scales better, because, unlike Bitcoin, it hasn't limited itself to a cripplingly tiny blocksize just to allow Blockstream to make money."
Setting up a wallet can still be time consuming
It's time consuming and can be somewhat difficult for new cryptocurrency users to set up their own wallet using the GUI wallet or the Command Line Wallet. In order to strengthen and further decentralize the Monero network, users are encouraged to run a full node for their wallet, however this can be an issue because it can take up to 24-48 hours for some users depending on their hard-drive and internet speeds. To mitigate this issue, users can run a remote node, meaning they can remotely connect their wallet to another node in order to perform transactions, and in the meantime continue to sync the daemon so in the future they can then use their own node.
For users that do run into wallet setup issues, or any other problems for that matter, there is an extremely helpful troubleshooting thread on the Monero subreddit which can be found here. And not only that, unlike some other cryptocurrency subreddits, if you ask a question, there is always a friendly community member who will happily assist you. Monero.how is a fantastic resource too!
Despite still being difficult to use, the user-base and price may increase dramatically once it is easier to use. In addition, others believe that when hardware wallets are available more users will shift to Monero.

///Conclusion///

I actually still feel a little shameful for promoting Monero here, but feel a sense of duty to do so.
Monero is transitioning into an unstoppable altruistic beast. This year offers the implementation of many great developments, accompanied by the likelihood of a dramatic increase in price.
I request you discuss this post, point out any errors I have made, or any information I may have neglected to include. Also, if you believe in the Monero project, I encourage you to join your local Facebook or Reddit cryptocurrency group and spread the word of Monero. You could even link this post there to bring awareness to new cryptocurrency users and investors.
I will leave you with an old on-going joke within the Monero community - Don't buy Monero - unless you have a use case for it of course :-) Just think to yourself though - Do I have a use case for Monero in our unpredictable Huxleyan society? Hint: The answer is ?
Edit: Added in the Tail Emission section, and noted Dan Bilzerian as a Monero investor. Also added information regarding the XMR.TO payment service. Added info about hardfork
